Acapulco - Purchases of folk art, crafts and souvenirs - General Tips

As a center for cruise ships and as Mexico's "Grande Dame" Tourism, Acapulco is a great center to purchase quality folk art from throughout Mexico. Moreover, certainly an easier way to find a lot of small inexpensive gifts and souvenirs. This article provides general information and advice on the purchase of folk arts, crafts and souvenirs in Acapulco. A related article with deals in the city where these things. A third group concerns the separate issue of Mexican silver.

Planning Your shopping trips. Travel Experts generally recommend that you make a list of people you need to buy, prepare a budget, and shop in two steps. Make a trip just for navigate, and another to make your purchase. It is best to do all this at the beginning of their vacation time, so you can relax and not worry about later. shopping results Late on the outskirts of the city purchases almost always less inspired, more stress, and more cost to do it carefully. Everyone knows that the airport waiting room is not the best place to buy anything.

His first outing - to navigate - is just to know all the options and choices before settling down to negotiation. You can also get good ideas about how variable are asking prices, and therefore, if the bargaining will result in a good business. You can also determine whether you should carry money or credit card will work fine for you. After the first exit, review your shopping list with more specific ideas (and costs) which met during the survey.

The haggling over prices. In general, negotiating with the seller can produce a lower price for you, especially if you are in an outdoor market or on the beach. Products in formal establishments retail (with air conditioning and windows) are generally not priced with the expectation of bargaining. You may be able to get a discount for cash or quantity, but usually the quoted price is the price. If you are lucky enough to be talking to the owner or manager, you can apply a more generous discount if you can think of a reason which they deserve. In most other places you must make counter-offers. Imagine the opening price is twice what the seller is waiting. If you can not get the price to where it wants it, leave. Acapulco has many other vendors competing for your preference. If you arrive at a price that works for you, eg "OK." Unless you particularly enjoy haggling over prices, its vacation time is more valuable than the few dollars more than you could save to invest additional time and effort.

Authentic folk art. Several shops and galleries selling folk art, some of them signed by renowned artists. This includes the numbers of accounts of the Huichol and black pottery from Oaxaca. A number of places offer reasonable quality for not much money. Indian Sellers on the beaches of Acapulco and sidewalks to sell his own work, including textiles, jewelry made of seeds, shells and semi-precious minerals, masks, carved wooden ornaments, beds, bowls, baskets, hats, bags and figurines. In general, the inventory is both a place that is difficult to see a single item. Pick up and hold away from everything else to see if it appeals to that when looked at in isolation. Examine labor. Necklaces and bracelets of shells or stones that are held together by a fiber cable (instead of a string) must be sturdy, but flexible.

Mexican Silver involves several additional considerations. See related article covering this topic.

Souvenirs. The open-air markets should be your starting point for the memories. Just make sure that what interests him is the Article premises, and not something imported from Asia. This is particularly true with anything made of plastic. You can buy a shirt or towel that says almost nothing of sincere spicy. Shot glasses, piƱatas, hats, ceramics - all are drawn out for you. You can negotiate the price, and you can work and travel packages discounts if you buy more than one item. Credit card sales - where possible - usually result in higher prices because the seller pays a fee processing. In addition, the amount of the sale is subject to a value 17% VAT, which the State collects from its supplier. (Cash sales are subject to the same tax, but the audit trail is much weaker.)

Two caveats. If you're new to the tourist souvenir of Mexico scene, know that a couple of articles for tourism are the pitfalls and should be avoided:

  • "Creams Tortuga." This is a double scam. If the product is authentic, ie, from sea turtle eggs, you know the species is in danger of extinction. The product is contraband, and if found in customs, will be confiscated. In any case, science rejects the claims of this product. In addition, since it is a crime to collect the eggs, most unscrupulous sellers can not find more genuine article, so I just repackage lotion cheap, greasy and pass it off.
  • Souvenir Tequila.'s Okay to buy a bottle of tequila decorated - especially small ones for sale in many places. But do not believe that the content is a major fact of tequila. It may not be of tequila at all! It is best not to drink. If you buy a souvenir bottle of tequila, which was empty before boarding a plane, to avoid problems with the regulations.
