Tom Ford & The Single Man
Tom Ford brings his genius to the silver screen with his first film, “A Single Man.”
Tom Ford is a multi-faceted man. He has served as creative director for both Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, created his own label and has received numerous titles and awards from renowned groups such as the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum and TIME Magazine. Now, the internationally celebrated designer can add a new title to his résumé: film director.
His premier film, “A Single Man,” stars British bad-boy Colin Firth and the riveting Julianne Moore. The movie, based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel, tells the story of a homosexual English professor, George Falconer(Firth), who teaches at a California college in the 1960s. The film occurs over the course of one day, chronicling George’s painful memories of a recently deceased lover, his plans to kill himself and a very steamy hook-up with one of his students. What results is a thrilling, psychological period piece. After debuting only three months ago at the 66th Annual Venice Film Festival, the film has already started generating Oscar buzz.
Every bit of the darkly artistic film contains elements of Ford. He made sure to perfect the authenticity of the 1960s with the help of his set design team, the same one behind the primetime hit Mad Men, and his Oscar-nominated costume designer, Arianne Phillips. Of course, Ford also designed all of Firth’s suits himself. The contrast of textile and skin is sensual and erotic and conveys the element of luxury that Ford is so famous for in his designs. Besides the awe-inspiring wardrobe, Ford also gets our attention with extreme close-ups and varying color schemes.
The $7 million project was financed completely by Ford, as he always wanted to make films. “It’s something that’s very important to me, it’s not a lark,” he said at the Toronto Film Festival. “I hope it will be the first of many.”
So do we.
“A Single Man” opens in limited release on Friday, December 11. A nationwide release is planned for early 2010.
