So far we have discussed the assessment of our finances, budget, debt and credit traps. Is this segment will tie it all together by presenting a plan for our budget under control and start building real wealth.
At the beginning of this series to compare the budget of a balloon with a pin. You put a pinhole in a balloon and try to fly, but as air fills the balloon gets bigger hole and continually have to blow harder to keep the balloon inflated. Think of the globe as their wealth and the pinhole in their spending. The key to keeping the pinhole at a manageable level and allow the balloon to inflate it is absolutely necessary get a handle on spending - a lesson our government would do well to learn!
In the budget year I suggested that she come with three categories cost: required, important and discretion. We have defined more necessary as things already are involved or the basic needs of running a household as rent or mortgage, car payment (if you owe on a car), food, utilities, etc. For many people, debt is a significant amount of necessary spending. If this is your situation then we must start by looking withdraw as much of that possible and / or restructurings. The priority would be debt for which you are paying the highest interest rate (especially if some of those who fall into the category of credit traps I spoke last segment). Identify issues and focus on them. How do you get the fruit as soon as possible?
First, you may want to look into the sale of some assets. You really need that boat? How often do you use versus how much the payments are reducing their budget? "You may be able to get enough money to pay the note off and maybe some left over to pay the debts of others?
Then look at your discretion and significant expense. Is it possible to reduce some of that and maybe put a few dollars a month to get rid of credit card debt? How "important" things are in your list of important? Would too much of a blow to their living standards to eliminate or reverse some of these things temporarily to get rid of high interest accounts credit card?
Finally, you might consider debt consolidation. For example, you may be able to get a mortgage loan interest rate low (which, depending on your tax situation may also be tax deductible) to pay a higher interest rate credit cards or loans? Warning: Be very careful using this method to retire the debt. Some people take out a home equity loan to pay off credit cards. This gives them some relief and start using their credit cards again. Now not only have a home equity loan to pay, but they're back which began with the credit cards again. You must be committed not to return to old ways for this to work.
When looking for consolidation debt, always be careful to use the "credit repair" companies or "debt consolidation." Many of them are scams which only makes things worse. Also, be careful when transferring balances from one credit card to another just because it has a lower interest rate. Often "low" interest rate is only a starting interest rate and usually transfer fee. You want to make sure that you have read the letter small and has been through all the numbers when the debt restructuring.
Task: Think about the things we discussed today and see if there are ways you can start paying some of its debt early. One way to look is to consider what they could do with that money if they did not pay all that interest! Once you pay a debt of you can pull the money paid in that payment of the next.
next segment we will be to look at the part where real wealth creation start paying - savings.
