Stainless steel kitchen appliances are very popular nowadays and many homeowners prefer them to gadgets and kitchenware of other materials. They are not only very durable and long lasting but also elegant and quite resistant to rust and various stains. However, even the most hardened of the stainless steel appliances will start to show signs of wear and tear and get a speckle or two of rust on their surfaces. This not only makes the appliances look less appealing but it will also cause you problems later on.
There are several ways to effectively remove stain and rust from stainless steel kitchen appliances and stainless steel items in general, and some are more effective than others. Some of the most common items that people need rust removed from are kitchen sinks, barbecue grills or the steel kitchen knife.
If the item is very small, such as a pocket knife, applying a coat of spray such as the popular WD40 on the surface is more than enough to remove the stain of rust from it. All you need to do is apply the spray and then use a paper towel to wipe the spray remains down. This usually removes the rust along with it as well.
For heavier rust stains on it, you need to use some fine sandpaper such as the 320 or even 400 grit and sand lightly the area that needs to have the rust removed from. Avoid pressing down too hard or using the sandpaper too much on the surface as you might accidentally remove the protective coating. This will effectively expose the actual metal underneath.
When it comes to something big, such as the kitchen sink or a stainless steel cabinet, the issues are much bigger. Try to avoid any chemical ingredients on larger surfaces and try to go instead the natural way. For example you can use lemon juice, baking soda and white vinegar to make a mix that will be applied to the rusty surface. Leave the mix on for a couple of hours so that the natural elements react with the rust in order to break it down and also dissolve it. You can even leave it on overnight. The next morning all you need to do is wash this paste off and then wipe the sink clean and dry with a soft cloth.
If you use natural ingredients instead of chemical compounds, you will also help the environment along with cleaning your kitchen appliances from layers of rust and stains.
