Strabismus is the medical term to define the condition in which human eyes are not looking straight ahead. Eyes may seem to give a cross-eyed over them. The condition has been known to be very common in babies under 6 months of age but can affect babies and young children. There are two types of "squint" depends on the direction of the eye to look at it. Crossed means the eyes are directed inward while a divergent strabismus refers to when the eyes are looking at the side or away from the center.
In infants under 6 months of age (approximately), it is common that their eyes often seem to wander from several objects that have in their central vision. This is perfectly normal as the eyes of babies are still developing and eye muscles are strengthened. Very often these eye wandering will be intermittent, but when it happens all the time which could be a constant strabismus. Once the baby is older than six months, the roving eye who have ceased and that should be able to focus better on objects. In either example (constant strabismus, or over 6 months), if your baby still seems to be wandering eye then this is a case to be discussed and presented to your doctor.
Depending on the severity of strabismus, the doctor may recommend several courses of treatment. These may include glasses (goggles), and quite often the use of a patch is placed over the good eye so the weaker eye has to work to focus on objects sight. Over time this helps to strengthen the muscles of the eye and has been known to help in cases of strabismus. In addition, eye exercises that involve a lot of coordination Hand-to-eye can be given however often only used when the child in question is capable of understanding and comprehending the year in question.
By Finally, the most difficult situation is to have the surgery that there are usually two techniques considered. The surgeon may have on the eye muscle and attach it to a different part of the eyeball or they deem it necessary to shorten the muscle simply by cutting a portion of the trash. In most if not all cases, surgery is only recommendation that all other forms of treatment have proven unsuccessful.
