A digital multimeter is the most versatile and useful tools in your garage. It is important to have a good model and understand how to use it properly. A multimeter Digital is really three devices in one box. It is a voltmeter that measure electrical potential across a device in volts. It is an ammeter that measures the amount electric current through a device. This is measured in amperes. Finally, a digital multimeter is an ohmmeter that measures electrical resistance of a device. The electrical resistance is measured in ohms.
Today, modern digital multimeters are designed to be rugged and easy to operate. A good multimeter will have a durable plastic casing and large, easy to use buttons. The upper part contains the digital reading from the screen to out. This is something you should check thoroughly before buying one. Make sure the screen is big enough to read it and be sure to check the reading with sunlight. It is likely that you will use this tool out of direct sunlight.
Below the digital readout is a big button called the function selector. The selector function lets you change modes digital multimeter operates in. For example, you can easily switch voltmeter to ammeter to ohmmeter with the turn of dial. Again make sure the function switch is large and easy to operate. Most function switches have approximately eight positions. Most have three brands that the voltage V measured. They measure AC, DC and currents of low voltage in the millivolt range. Then there will be two positions marked with A ~ A and =. The A ~ measures AC current in the amplifiers and A = measures DC current in amperes. The horseshoe upside resistance measured in ohms Ω.
To to measure the voltage, in turn, for the first time in the digital multimeter and let it go through its startup procedure. In general, digital reading lights and the unit goes through Self-diagnosis of the box. Once completed you are ready to measure volts. Now turn the function switch to V = to measure DC volts. Now you will have connect the red and black wires with the digital multimeter. Connect the red wire to the red input terminal with a label VΩ and connect the black wire to the terminal labeled COM for common terminal. Now you can measure volts putting the red wire to the terminal with the greatest potential and the black wire on the bottom.
A measuring amplifiers, cables must be connected in a different way. First set the function switch in position A =. Connect the black wire to the COM terminal. Now connect the red wire the terminal labeled 300mA. Now you are ready to connect the meter in series being measured by opening the circuit device and inserting the meter between the outstanding issues. The results will be in milliamps because you are using the 300mA terminal.
The third characteristic of a digital multimeter is its ability to measure to Ohms. Ohm is a measure of resistance in an electrical circuit. First, disconnect all cables and power sources of the device being measured. Now turn the dial Ω function switch and connect your leads. The red wire is connected to the terminal labeled VΩ and the black terminal connects to the COM terminal. The display shows OL. This is normal and means there is an overload. Now connect the wires through the device to measure ohms.
These are the basic functions of a multimeter digital. Remember to turn off the meter before putting back in the toolbox. You do not want a dead battery the next time you need it. There several good brands on the market today. Fluke digital multimeters are probably the most popular and will not go wrong with one.
