Super yacht security machinery spaces
The engine room and machinery spaces associated with boats, yachts and mega yachts are safe and aesthetically nice places to forget that it can be very dangerous. Everyone wants to look at them with chrome or polished brass, gleaming white bilges dry and stainless exhaust pipes. Not everyone wants to work in them especially at sea. The responsibility for the safety and efficiency it is often seen - "is best left to somebody else." Someone else is the chief engineer. It needs people with a full consciousness and an innate sense of caution to keep machinery spaces only "place to be proud ", but also a safe place to work or visit. Advances in technology and expressions such as" machinery spaces "," The hermetically sealed units, "Oil-Free Compressors" and intrinsically safe equipment, understandably can lead to assume that everything is well - unless an alarm or a specialist inspector indicates otherwise. Bluewater Yachting is a MCA approved industry leader dedicated to teaching Y4, and Y2 Engineering Y3 in Antibes, Palma and Ft Lauderdale. This information is not intended to replace existing security systems and the documentation already available, but limited to complement of a realistic and viable, and we hope to increase safety awareness.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency Organization and the International System Security Management are rightly concerned with the safety of machinery spaces. This topic is always echo in the curriculum outlined in Min 208, the requirements stated in MGN 156 and each oral examination conducted by engineering students yachts. Much work is underway between the various agencies in the world of Marine Engineering continuously improve safety standards and must begin in the classroom. Statistics in the sea of machinery space fire, floods, lack and do damage a good read, but there are many ways that engineers yacht, if AEC, Y4, Y3, Y2, Y1 or trained personnel, can drastically reduce the likelihood of an dangerous or embarrassing that occur in the first place.
So how can improve things? My 33 years of experience in and around the machinery spaces, which incidentally should include all the auxiliary engine room, steering gear compartment, emergency generator rooms, facilities for charging the battery, air conditioning and refrigeration plant rooms, confined spaces, LPG, Gas and stowage of gasoline, to name a few, is almost entirely of common sense education and certification. Common sense is an old expression, but what does that mean in modern ships? It is clear that awareness of the environment, understanding of basic engineering, a good eye and an inquisitive mind, make a good guard or splitter, but also a systematic education and approved and the testing process that saves the day and maybe even the ship! Always ask something that sounds vague or unconvincing. "Never accept without proof" is a good starting point and "Excellent - show me the results" have been very helpful replies to replies of wool. Statements such as "Do not worry about fuel quality is large and low sulfur content, thus "should ring alarm bells (for those who are familiar with Annex 6 of MARPOL and DRY!). Well, show me your data product specification and material safety data sheet giving details.
Since I have older and perhaps wiser, I have, even in commercial buses or aircraft, considered the what ifs! What if the engine burst into flames, so if the bus skidded and turned over or the driver collapsed and the cockpit filled with smoke - what would you do? Perhaps this is taking things too far, and without being paranoid consideration, care and mind exercise may be more useful in the case of a real emergency. Engineers or not, those of you who have participated in a real floods, fires, electrocution or accidents at sea or on land will agree - the cuts pump adrenaline into the first, and then pump quick thinking, Then the shouting and making the pump. These are then combined to produce quite surprising reactions even from the quietest of the employees. Often the word stories student in the classroom in Bluewater to share our experiences. It's amazing what is learned while listening to the experiences of other peoples (especially when mistakes are made) and what I mean is that learning memory retrieval is supported with details and the fact that demonstrate understanding. Do not just list of things to do in case of a particular situation or drawing a diagram.
I'm a big believer in an aide-memoir or aides-memory is correct. The important fact is that not a sign of weakness or lack of memory, which are there simply to trigger reactions from the right in the correct order and do things that are not neighbors. The way in which subsequent actions are executed is in large part to the person and his ability, experience and confidence. I am also a supporter of the view that those working in machinery spaces must have a special aptitude and training to build up the trust that enables people to cope with extraordinary situations that can occur in such places. Having said that some of the best fighters of fire I've encountered have been the cooks and some of the worst cooks have been engineers. So how to manage risk? Security is everybody's business. quality training and regular testing is invaluable in identifying deficiencies, both in personnel and equipment. Where is the nearest exit to safety? Where is the nearest portable or fixed fire-extinguishing fire equipment? is that date?, has been tested?, you do what you want to do the day you really need? The security management in the spaces machine always comes down to either retain the documentation, good leadership and a regular practice. These features are considered in some quarters, to be a hindrance rather than a guarantee for the future. Recently I have been in a hotel where a number of portable fire extinguishers looked (in passing) were out of date for the test was charged under anti-sabotage or missing labels. In reporting my findings on the receipt to be treated with some suspicion in place of grace.
In a ship in the past I've found so emotional discussing issues with officials much easier by the use of an expression along the lines of "Lord, can not guarantee the safety or reliability of this equipment until you have proven that "This method can also help produce the necessary funds to purchase equipment or spare parts, especially when used in conjunction with trend analysis prepared. A simple graph with a trend line facing a "no zone charter may be more effective. The difficulty, of course, almost always found the time, hassle and motivation - this is where a good chief engineer worth his salt is going to open the road. Find the time, he makes the effort. Even when re-fueling of the ship, why not make entire ship procurement developments, breaking fighting fire gear and equipment for testing the MARPOL responsibilities and staff against the SOPEP (what - what I mean!). Involve all, get the latest board to leave out a real fire extinguisher (preferably not a dry powder inside), under supervision, of course, the right way and in the right direction, what color is correct, my God they are almost all red now! Make learning fun, but productive promote competition, demonstrate an ability to fire and bilge pumps for control of the discharge pressure and the length of a jet of water against the manufacturer's specified forward facing aft!
Meanwhile back to the subject of tedious paperwork, ensure that ships of general orders and engineering departments orders are written, read and signed by each member of the engineering team? How many copies of COSWP are on board, COS what? Not adjacent on the hypotenuse? Try to ensure that the heavy volume that is not being used to reinforce the inside of junior engineers mattress if sea conditions through! It is also good practice to start / stop routines posted next to each piece of equipment, it's amazing the number of fires and floods that are successfully treated by anyone know how to stop feeding the problem with the fuel, air or electricity. I saw a statistic not long ago that suggested more than 90% electrical fires aboard ships are extinguished with only isolate the source. Imagine how effective it would be practical in the case of a pipe 4000 psi hydraulic leak sprayed onto a surface glow! Of course, keep the doors closed contour air conditioning in summer is also an educational process, but leaving the door forward or backward integrity WEIGHT open sea is a recipe for disaster. The Oil Record Book, Engine room log and summary week are the first places to record events related to the company (or lack of) security, education, training and testing to produce an audit trail showing reasonable steps being taken. The use of a watch list to clear and collect all eventualities and a table of state machinery can be very effective clear to improve safety awareness and improve delivery clock - only to provoke discussion and definition of responsibilities. People should be encouraged to use all their senses to detect when things are not right, the question of unusual circumstances and follow the instincts, intrusive, even if it means going in search of the smell rotten eggs. If it is not cooking, then it could be anaerobic wastewater treatment plant slowly fill the boat with batteries or hydrogen sulfide release Hydrogen-load in air conditioning and ventilation.
Finally, the safety management system must be working in harmony with you to provide solutions and best practices and help to arrange the survey and inspection of coordinated and timely manner - make good use of them and the person appointed on land. At the risk of producing only a list (what is the difference between the list, heel and Loll? One of them is particularly dangerous) to produce their own concerns and discuss 10 the captain / owner / ISM and air their views and be proactive. A clean, well-educated trust boat is usually a safe boat. Bluewater sailing can satisfy all training needs and make your machinery spaces a safer place to work.
