Mizuhiki is the ancient Japanese art of knot tying.
Using a cord made of tightly wound paper, it can then be tied in a series of knots to create intricate looking bows, flowers, animals and other artistic creations like sculptures, frames and even baskets.
In the past, mizuhiki was used as decoration for special cards, letters and gifts for important people, and in some cases, to tie the Samurai top knot hairstyle.
Today, it's widely used to decorate cards and gifts, especially for occasions like weddings and birthdays, but there's a new wave of creativity for this art form that's becoming more and more popular.
By learning basic knots and combining them in patterns like one would for crocheting or knitting, it's possible to create stunning pieces of art like bouquets of flowers, life-sized creatures (like carp, butterflies...), and functional decorative items like place mats, coasters, baskets, hair and clothing accessories and even decoration to wrap around glassware.
In Japan, colour combination has a specific meaning, so the mizuhiki also must follow, even though it's simply a form of decoration.
For special joyous events like weddings, red and white or gold and silver combinations are used. For births, graduations, house warming and other happy occasions, simple red and white is used. Finally, sad events (funerals) use black, white and silver.
While these were the most commonly used colours in the past, it's now possible to find a much wider range and very interesting styles of mizuhiki to match any project or personality.
