Public Speaking: Tips for television, video and videoconferencing
Here are some things to consider when a camera TV is trained on you:
TELEVISION & VIDEOTAPE TIPS
* Gestures should be smaller.
* Make the clothes are "broken" and comfortable when sitting and standing.
* Before the performance, have instant photos or video taken of you while sitting and standing. Make sure your clothes look good in both positions.
* To see the background color of the whole, if possible. You do not want your clothes to mix and makes you invisible.
* Ask the producers for wardrobe color suggestions.
* Do not wear tight clothes with patterns or pin stripes. This causes an optical illusion called a moiré pattern that makes you look bad.
* Avoid clothing with large patterns or geometric shapes. The public will see your clothes instead of you.
* Avoid black, white or red on television or video. Even the best of cameras have trouble with these colors.
* Avoid flashy jewelry. That reflects light.
* Avoid jangly jewelry. Reflects light and makes the noise from the microphone (ie applies if you are on TV or not.)
* Wear your glasses if you wish, but avoid shiny frames.
* Council of the arches of your glasses to just outside the ears. This angles the lenses down to reduce glare from the lights.
* Use makeup. Has the practical purpose of reducing from the glare of television lights.
* Apply to all exposed body parts, like the back of the hands, arms, neck, etc. Apply cover-up under of the eyes to mask bags and / or wrinkles.
* Good studios are kept cool to negate the effect of the hot TV lights. You can freeze for time until the lights come on, then you may get burned. Dress for the heat, but bring a jacket or extra cover to be used while you are waiting to move forward.
* Carry a handkerchief or tissues to dab perspiration during breaks.
* Do not second guess the camera. Act as if you is always on the screen.
* Make sure your makeup, costumes, and hair are consistent with his message.
MEN
* Use knee socks.
* Always keep double breasted jackets buttoned.
* Casa chest jackets can be opened, but not too wide.
* REPEAT wear makeup. TV lights can penetrate several layers of skin. You can not shave close enough to prevent whiskers from showing without makeup.
* Do not forget makeup receding hairlines or bald heads.
Tip: Run the thin part of the tie through the loop on the back of the main part of his tie clip the thin part of the shirt below the loop. This will keep your tie perfectly centered without the tie clip see.
LA WOMEN
* Do not wear bright red lipstick or lip gloss. Stick to softer tones and lips gently with a little dust.
* Consider of dress shields if you perspire easily.
* Make sure your hair will stay where you want. Do not want to be playing with her while in the air.
* Make sure a lavaliere or lapel microphone and transmitter can be attached to your clothing.
Lillian Brown has written the best resource I know on the subject of appear on television. It's called "the best audience: The Complete Guide to successful public appearances in the Meeting Room in the Platform and on TV "(Newmarket Press: New York, 1989).
VIDEOCONFERENCE
* If possible before the videoconference, send remote participants location brochures, copies of the agenda, and copies of images.
* Try to get someone else to handle the camera and other equipment. Have them shoot close, if possible. With more than one presenter, if you leave the wide-angle camera, viewers will have difficulty recognizing who is speaking.
* Periodically ask for feedback from the remote sites. Its the potential for misunderstanding multiply when communicated electronically.
* Remember that it is who are always on the camera. Use the microphone mute button if you have to talk outside the main program.
