Modern technology has made it possible for us to see what we've been missing. Eye Laser Treatment really is a sight for sore eyes. The corrective surgery has made it possible for millions of people around the world to take a better look at the world around them. Our eyes, like any other part of the human body, are vulnerable to various problems. Vision issues like astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia are actually quite common and can be normally corrected with glasses or contact lenses. For those who cannot see themselves wearing glasses there are some alternatives.
Eye Laser Treatment is becoming more popular everyday. There are various types of laser surgery that can be performed to correct your vision problems. These procedures do not come cheap. However, the results can be amazing. The art of laser surgery has come a long way. The surgeon's skills have greatly improved with experience and the technology has made the procedures safer and more successful. If you feel you is a candidate for laser eye surgery you should know that there are a variety of procedures to choose from. Let's examine some of these surgical alternatives:
1. LASIK Eye Surgery - LASIK is the shorter version for the technical definition of laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis. This is probably one of the most popular alternatives to glasses or contact lenses because it is an outpatient procedure and the recovery time is typically very short. The LASIK procedure basically alters the structure of the cornea. If the surgery is a success the optimal results would be that instead of light rays missing their mark on the retina; the cornea will direct the light rays directly onto it. This procedure is completed on a fragile part of the eye and there are always risks with any surgery. It should be know that LASIK does not guarantee 20/20 vision although around 70% will achieve it. Even if you have this procedure you may still need enhancement procedures in the future. The sad part is; this procedure is not typically covered through an insurance plan. This less than 15 minute procedure allows the surgeon to cut a tiny flap of tissue away from the cornea; alterthe shape of the cornea and then the flap is then pulled back over that area. No stitches are involved and a simple eye patch covers the eye for protection so the healing may begin. Many people return to work the very next day.
2. Photoretractive Keratectomy (PRK) This procedure is the predecessor and alternative to LASIK laser eye correction surgery. This procedure is similar to LASIK except that the corneal flap is not necessary. The excimer laser is used to implement this procedure which basically removes tissue from the cornea as calculated by a very high tech computer to alter the curvature and permit the retina to receive a clearer vocal point. Studies have shown that in regards to the myopic population; at least 80% could be qualified for this procedure. As with LASIK; it is recommended that the patient be an adult age 19 or older and the eyes cannot be suffering from any disease or illness that would prevent surgery. This procedure is normally more painful and the recovery time is longer.
3. LASEK -LASEK or Laser epithelial keratomileusis is another alternative that is quite similar to PRK. In cases where the outer layer of the cornea is too thin to produce a corneal flap; the LASEK procedure calls for the epithelial flap to be raised; the alteration implemented and then this flap lowered back into position. Once again; the recovery time is longer than LASIK.
As with any surgery it is best to consult your medical professional and allow them to decide which option is best for you. They can explain all of the risks and requirements that are involved with the various procedures. When it comes to laser eye correction surgery; seeing is believing.
