Automatic Watches have become the most sought after watch and why? Why is it that people prefer automatic watches over just an ordinary wind up watch? I remember when I was a kid, my dad had a wind up watch that you would constantly find him winding up to ensure the watch did not stop and leave him without the time and maybe the date. Wind up watches are almost extinct today as automatic watches have taken over!
Automatic watches are preferred over mechanical watches mainly because of their ability to keep time constantly without winding the watch. This also helps if your watch has a date window unless of course a short month occurs as it does when leap year comes around. If you are using a wind up watch with a date window this can be time consuming to wind the watch thru numerous 24 hour intervals to get to the desired date. Many people also like the movement of the second hand over the digital read out like with a quartz watch. While quartz watches are very popular as well, those who appreciate and have a "thing" for watches generally prefer the automatic watch over the quartz watch because of it's craftsmanship and quality. In general automatic watches keep the most precise time possible and are easy to change/update when traveling from time zone to time zone and are maintenance free.
While automatic watches are usually more expensive than wind up watches or even quartz watches, they do last longer. It just depends on how long you plan to keep the watch and if you plan on wearing it on a daily basis. Many times people will buys expensive automatic watches for special occasions, not to be worn for everyday use, whereas others will buy less expensive quartz watches that work just as well for everyday use and usually do not last as long. These are usually the people who own multiple watches or who break or lose watches frequently.
You should have your expensive watches serviced every 3-5 years to ensure a longer lifetime. They will re-lubricate the watch and more than likely check the seals. You can get this done at any jewelry store in your area.
