The Facts About Contact Lens

Contact lenses are miraculous pieces of plastic that let you see without glasses. In most cases, the lenses contact is used as a substitute for glasses, allowing you to do without them. Contact lenses can also be used to treat certain eye diseases or may be used for cosmetic purposes to change the apparent color of the eyes.

Successfully wear contact lenses requires a "partnership" between the installer, ie, an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, or possibly an optician, and you, the user.

The installer must first decide if your eyes are healthy enough to wear contact lenses. If so, then the installer will set the correct lenses for your eyes and your needs and teaches you how to use and care for them.

The installer should be available if problems arise, if not available, then the installer should have a system in place to address with such situations.

Must follow the instructions, care for and wear corrective lenses, and return as needed for routine care and emergency.

An installer can be an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, or possibly an optician.

Ophthalmologists are physicians who have graduated college and medical school (MD) or osteopathy (DO), after three to five years of additional training are needed and dedicated to the study on the eye examinations (including the installation of contact lenses and glasses), diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and perform eye surgery. The Ophthalmologists perform both conventional surgery and laser surgery.

Optometrists have graduated from a school of optometry (OD), where they are trained on eye exams, contact lens fitting and glasses, and according to state license, the treatment of certain eye diseases. Optometrists do not perform laser eye surgery or conventional surgery.

Optical glasses adjustment based on the prescription of an ophthalmologist or optometrist. In some states, opticians can fit contact lenses. Opticians do not perform eye exams, not to diagnose or treat eye diseases, and do not perform the surgery.

Soft lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP) lenses are the main available. Each has specific indications and specific wear regime care. The biggest hard (PMMA) lenses are rarely used today and have risks similar to RGP lenses. There are large scleral lenses for special eye conditions.

Contact lenses are used primarily to avoid having to wear eye conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, or to avoid bifocals (Multifocal lenses).

Can also be used to treat other conditions. Keratoconus is a condition in which the surface of the eye has a very irregular (Astigmatism). When glasses no longer provide adequate vision, contact lenses are used.

Contact lenses are often used after surgery refractive when under-or over-corrections occur. After the surgery, and in some cases of eye diseases of the cornea, selling soft contact lenses can be used to allow the cornea to heal or may be used to relieve pain.

Some lenses are for everyday use. Soft contact lenses for everyday use, you lenses used one day and then throw them away. This allows one to dispense with the solutions, cleaning and disinfection of the lenses. Allows use of intermittent, as weekend or occasional use, if desired.

Most lenses and some RGP lenses are worn for a day and then removed, cleaned, disinfected and all night. The Soft lenses are usually replaced on a regular basis, which varies from one week to one month to three months to a year. RGP lenses can last for years with usual care.

Extended wear lenses generally mild, are worn overnight for a week and then replaced every one to two weeks. Trying to extend the wear of lenses beyond the recommended replacement schedule is a false economy and an invitation to potential disaster.

night wear decreases the amount of oxygen available to the eye and increases the probability (rare) of infection by four times. Because of this, some doctors do not recommend prolonged use of contact lenses. new lenses can be safer.

Problems resulting from contact lens range from the inability to remove the lenses (usually after the first way of being) to blindness from infection. Proper installation, training and care and maintenance can prevent most problems.

To be fit with contact lenses, the installer must provide the patient with information about what to do in case of a problem (call the office, go to the emergency room etc.)

After being in shape, the inability to remove the lens from time to time occur. Call your installer for instructions on how to proceed.

The most common reasons for contact lens wearers to seek attention is irritation of the eyes, redness or blurred vision. These can be caused by lens wear out or warping, a change in the eyes that need new targets, ill-fitting lenses, poor lens care, or sensitivity to solutions. These drawbacks relatively minor must be evaluated, as they may signal the onset of corneal ulceration and deep infection.

Solutions with excess disposable contact lens, it is important to use only the solution recommended by the installer. Some solutions may be incompatible with certain lenses, or may contain components such as thimerosal (20% of people are allergic to it), that are not compatible with the eyes of some people.

One of the main concerns from the user point of view, is the danger when a contact lens from the eye. The lens is on the surface of the eye, but can not travel "back to the brain" because the clear covering of the eye under the eyelid and is maintained in order to go back.

If the target can not be repositioned on the cornea, which is under the lid and can be easily slid or moved into position on the cornea (sometimes require the help of the installer). It will do no harm while under the eyelid for a number of hours.

Redness of the eye associated with pain, blurred vision and sensitivity to light is more severe and may signal a potentially blinding condition, such as a corneal ulcer due to infection.

Abrasions (scratches) on the surface of the cornea (corneal abrasion) is usually the result of insufficient oxygen reaching the surface of the eye, but can also be caused by dirt or other organs to get under the lens. May be due to excessive wear contact lenses or lenses that are not tolerated by the eye. These alterations of the cornea not only be very painful, but also may predispose the eye to a serious infection, blindness.

Occasionally, someone inadvertently soak your lenses in the cleaning solution or soap solution, resulting in redness of the eye with a lot of pain. This is very uncomfortable, but usually causes no permanent damage. Drops and Eye irrigation may be necessary to relieve pain.

Makeup can get under the irritation of the lens and the cause or a film of grease the lens, making it difficult to see clearly. Sometimes, polishing in the office, you must remove this film.

It is important to note that any of these complaints the eyes can occur and have nothing to do with contact lenses can be symptoms of other eye-related, such as infections, cataracts, or glaucoma. You may need to see your eye care professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Any change in status the eyes of contact lens wearers should be evaluated for the cause and possible treatment. Whether or not these complaints are due to eye contact lenses, which has yet to be diagnosed and treated. If in doubt, call your installer for information about how to proceed, remember that opticians do not treat eye diseases.
