Do you have trouble seeing up close? you may have hyperopia. But it could also be presbyopia. Indeed, the two are similar but have different causes. As such, they have different treatments as well.
Hyperopia, or farsightedness, occurs when light rays entering the eye do not focus directly on the retina, but in fact focus behind it. This is caused when the eyeball is shorter than it should be. People can be affected for hyperopia at any age. Sometimes children outgrow this condition because their eyes as they do. But if they do, farsightedness can be treated with glasses corrections, either glasses or contact lenses. Laser surgery such as LASIK, is also an option.
Presbyopia, however, also makes you have difficulty reading closely, but is related to age, and affects people over 40. It is caused by hardening of the lens inside the eye. The result is the same farsightedness near vision poor. In general, it is treated with corrective lenses. reading glasses, used only when viewing things closely, are the most common treatment. Another option is monovision contact lenses occur when a lens corrects distance vision, if necessary, and the other lens corrects near vision. Users then are trained to use one eye for reading and one eye to see things in the distance. Contact lenses also may be in progressive multifocal way, similar to glasses progressive channel.
Hyperopia is not inevitable, and can be treated surgically. Presbyopia is inevitable, and until recently, was not treated with general surgery. When the eyes begin to lose flexibility and are no longer clear to see clearly close up, is the time for treatment. Although surgery for presbyopia available, the vast majority of patients are opting for the option to use reading glasses. They are safe, that do not require an invasive procedure, and are elegant. If the loss of clear near vision due to presbyopia is a foregone conclusion, you can also be a fashion first.
