Currently, advanced technology has allowed one piece bifocal glasses to different force curves at the top and bottom. And now we have multifocal or varifocals, to help our sight. But long before humans invented bifocals, a fish that lives in brackish water of the four-eyed fish has Anableps-view bifocals since its inception.
The Anableps live in the waters that stretches from southern Mexico through South America. It is found in the mouths of rivers, water that is neither sweet nor salty, but somewhere in between. This type of natural water is produced in the mouths of rivers and swamps near the sea.
Anableps are schooling fish, and if kept in an aquarium should be in groups. They are viviparous, and can grow to about a foot long, with a lifespan of six years.
The name of `The four-eyed fish" isn `t entirely correct, of course. At first glance, these fish seem to have four eyes, a pair of look up and another pair of look below. But that's an optical illusion. They have two large round eyes, but each eye is divided horizontally into two parts by a strip of skin. Anableps are surface dwellers.
